Welcome to Tranquility is an American comic book series created by Gail Simone and Neil Googe and published by Wildstorm.



The series is set in Tranquility, a fictional town in California, which is home to retired superheroes and supervillains (known colloquially as "Maxis") as well as their families. This town coexists with the existing Wildstorm Universe, with frequent references to its heroes, such as The Authority and Gen 13.

"I had this idea, that I believe came from the fact that both Waid and I were crazy about The Andy Griffith Show. And I started thinking about how funny it would be to have a town full of superheroes, but unlike any other book, the town itself is strictly small town America, almost a throwback of sorts.



Around the same time, I?d seen a documentary about this small town in Florida that the locals called ?Gibtown,? that had become a retirement haven for carnies, including human oddities. It was striking, because in that town, the tourist norms were considered the outsiders.



From there it was an easy float down the river to make the concepts match. I was born and raised on a farm in a very small town, so when I talk about small towns, I know a little bit about the subject. The vast, vast majority of superhero stories take place either in New York or altered versions of New York, and that really leaves most of the country out in the cold.



...It gots old folks. It?s got a superhero who forgot his magic word and reads from foreign language dictionaries every day to try to find it again. It?s got a mayor who can throw cars through the air. It?s got a spunky, smart, tough female sheriff. It?s got Zombie Zeke, the motorcyclin? grave-diggin? undead keeper of the local cemetery. It?s got a cross between Howard Hughes and Shirley Temple crashing planes on Main Street on a regular basis. It?s a damn fun place to visit."
