Este libro, podría considerarse como una biblia del cómic. El genio de Will Einser (autor de Spirit, su obra más famosa) logró condensar en esta obra la teoría del cómic en su nivel adulto, fresco e innovador del cual él fue parte. Comparable a la Gramática de Nebrija (para el castellano) o al libro de entrevistas entre Truffaut y Hitchcock (para el cine). Este ensayo (de 1985) sentó las bases de la novela gráfica, no un género, sino una nueva manera de expresión artística a través de los dibujos y las palabras.
