The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Latino Literature

In this encyclopedia, a project of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage program, well-respected Hispanic scholar, publisher, and editor Kanellos brings together hundreds of entries on Latino authors as well as concepts, themes, movements, genres, events, and organizations that have shaped this literature from colonial times to the present. Aiming to cover the broad spectrum that is Latino literature, more than 700 entries range from a single paragraph to several pages, and each is written in a style that is not only accessible to those with a passing interest but also provides enough information for a comprehensive understanding of the topic and its importance. Arranged in an A–Z format, each entry is written and signed by one of 60 expert contributors and followed by further-reading suggestions for continued study. The general bibliography in volume 3, though robust, lacks Internet resources and contains many items published in the last century. Each volume contains a list of entries as well as a guide to related topics, a nice feature for students starting a research project. Although Latino literature is itself centered in the U.S. and both the advisory board and contributors are predominantly American, specifically from the Southwest, they also include Cubans, Mexicans, and other nationalities, giving the material a well-rounded viewpoint. Facts On File’s single-volume Encyclopedia of Hispanic-American Literature (2008) has entries for individual works as well as authors, movements, etc., and it serves as a good introduction for students, especially since it is tied to what is taught in high-school and college classrooms. Covering many more authors, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Latino Literature provides important information for scholars and general readers alike and is an excellent addition to public and academic libraries.
